I have been the proud Mummy to 7 Ocra-cats in my 27 years on this island. They are the most amazing, loving, adorable creatures…most folks on the island have at least one Ocra-cat. Ocra-cats is a non-profit organization, that was created in the 80’s to address the ongoing issue of the feral cat population. Among their many good deeds, they organize several spay and neuter clinics several times a year, to help control the population. However, their priority is finding forever homes for any of the cats and kittens that are brought to them, or are able to catch. When I first moved here, I was asked to foster a couple of young cats “until homes could be found”….yeah, right; I’ll just keep them for a while, cuddle them, feed them, love on them, get to know their personalities, and then turn them over to a total stranger. Not gonna happen. I ended up keeping each and every one of them (obviously, a well-played tactic by one of the Ocra-cat members at the time). And I am thankful for each and every one of them. They have brought so much fun and joy to my life…and unconditional love. I know you’re not supposed to have favorites, but I absolutely did…my sweet, precious Punkin’. She was a tiny, orange thing; abandoned when she was weeks old. She was with me for 21 years, and she was one of the great loves of my life…she brought so much love and sparkle to my world; I can’t imagine life without her. I am the better for it.
